Music fans have repeatedly told us that Switchfoot is one of their favourite bands. So the question arises, "Why?!" Well, the answer can simply be... have you seen them live? Oops! was lucky enough to be at Switchfoot’s gig yesterday at the Max Pavilion, Singapore Expo.
Starting out with brothers, Jon Foreman, lead vocalist and Tim Foreman, bassist, they were joined by Chad Butler, a college friend of Jon’s, who is also a wizard on the drums. The three-piece band originally came out with their first album “The Legend of Chin”. Later on, Keyboardist, Jerome Frontamilas and Guitarist, Drew Shirley joined the band, after their own bands disbanded, and the three became five, producing albums “The Beautiful Letdown”, “Nothing is Sound” and recently, “Oh! Gravity!” Two reknowned bands in the local music scene, The Fire Fight as well as West Grand Boulevard opened for Switchfoot’s very first gig in Singapore. Performing only original compositions, the local bands got the crowd hyped up for the act of the night. The anticipation was building; the fanatic crowd elbowed their way towards the stage; there was cheering; a strum on the guitar; a beat on the drums and Switchfoot Live in Singapore began! Rock fists shrouded the mosh pit; the familiar tune of “Stars” from their last album “Nothing is Sound” enchanted the crowd.
Fans sung, rockers jumped. For many, the nostalgia of the good ol’ days of rock returned. This was not your typical rock show. It was more than that, this night was something momentous for Switchfoot easily set the standard of gigs for 2008! Switchfoot’s performance last night was what you would call a fan’s dream come true – not only did Tim went up close to the audience twice, halfway through the gig, silence and stillness caught the stage for a cool two minutes. The five piece band remained still under the spotlights - it would have been the perfect photo for a wax museum.
A voice then silenced the auditorium, “We are one tonight…” And Jon crashed to the front of the stage enthralling the audience, breaking the silence. Indeed we have been saved.
With the message in hand that “We are more than what people make of us”, truly, truly, Switchfoot is not only a musical band, but more of a people’s band. For those who missed the best opening gig of the year, grab their latest album “Oh! Gravity!” available at all good music stores. For this truly is a record worthwhile NOT to be illegally downloaded.
