7 March, Friday night, 6,000 people, Fort Canning Park. Standing room only. To see a band that has been described as a mix of modern rock, indie-rock, alt-rock, grunge and heavy rock. This music shouldn’t attract the mainstream audience but it does with over 6 million albums sold. Why? Because Incubus is that rare exception of a band – who dares to experiment with different sounds and take that risk with their music. The result – a distinctive music style that gets under your skin. In a good way.

Incubus hit the airwaves here in Singapore with their chart topping single Wish You Were Here off their Morning View album. On the road with their Light Grenades Tour, with Brandon Boyd as lead vocalist, one of the most amazingly talented and powerful singer in rock today, the band opened the Singapore gig with the slow and moody Quicksand, followed by Kiss To Send Us Off, which had the crowd jumping madly before plunging straight to their famous hits – Nice To Know You and Wish You Were Here! The boys of Incubus were welcomed by thousands of screaming fans, with a large proportion of guys at THE live concert venue – Fort Canning Park, brought in courtesy of LAMC Productions.

Saosin, one of the fastest growing headliners in the music industry, opened for Incubus which got the crowd geared up for the main act of the night! With the growing anticipation, the set quickly turned into a mosh pit with hands in the air and fans singing along to Drive, Anna Molly and Vitamin. Not particularly known for being a band who enjoys the kinda entertaining banter at gigs, what you get are Brandon with his “Thank you boys and girls!” and much display of his slender bare-bodied chest glistening with perspiration under the stage lights. Not that the girls mind. Especially the ‘three-girls groupie’ on stage – way too young to be gyrating as they did but hey music frees you from any inhibitions! It helps that lead vocalist, Boyd could still reach those high notes without much effort. His voice was forceful and passionate, his turns on the bongo drums – amazingly captivating and he seems possessed on stage, with one aim – to give the fans what they want. For many fans, this one night could not be just another ordinary gig. The clear skies, the good music, a cool drink in hand, beautiful people heady from the electrifying ambience equals to an amazingly kickass show!
